Over the next two years, Smoky would lead a soldier’s life, becoming a steadfast companion on the frontlines.
Although Smoky was not an official military dog, she wholeheartedly embraced her role alongside Corporal Wynne. She did not receive dog food or medical care, but instead, she shared Wynne’s rations and slept faithfully by his side in their tent. Together, they faced the trials and tribulations of war.
Smoky’s journey as a war dog was nothing short of extraordinary. She accompanied Wynne on 12 combat missions and numerous air raids, bringing joy to troops and wounded soldiers with the tricks she had mastered during moments of respite. Approximately 50 years after Smoky’s passing, a monument was erected to honor this remarkable canine companion. A life-size sculpture was created, depicting the iconic photograph that had made Smoky famous—a depiction of her seated within an upturned steel helmet.
