GiGi, a great horned owl, had a difficult beginning to her existence after suffering head injuries that was thought to have been brought on by a car. Thankfully, in May, she was sent to Mississippi’s Wild at Heart Rescue, where she met Douglas “Doug” Pojeky, the organization’s president and a well-known “birds of prey whisperer.”
GiGi made a miraculous recovery while receiving Pojeky’s diligent care, going from being seriously ill to being able to perch and feed herself on her own. Pojeky and GiGi formed an exceptional bond of love and trust throughout her recuperation.
Pojeky went one day on a trip to Michigan, leaving GiGi alone for a while. She literally spread her wings to welcome him when he came back. GiGi came up to him, wrapped her wings around him, and laid her head on his shoulder to show her love and appreciation for being saved.
“I have never seen someone with such a bond with these lovely birds,” said Dubuisson, the organization’s founder and director. Everyone was moved to tears by the touching exchange between GiGi and Pojeky, which is proof of the extraordinary bond that can develop between animals and people.
