GiGi, a great horned owl, faced a difficult start to life when she suffered head trauma, likely due to a car accident. However, her fortunes took a positive turn when she arrived at Mississippi’s Wild at Heart Rescue in May, where she crossed paths with Douglas “Doug” Pojeky, the rescue’s president and a renowned “birds of prey whisperer.”
Under Pojeky’s dedicated care, GiGi underwent a remarkable transformation, transitioning from a critical condition to regaining the ability to perch and feed herself independently. Throughout her recovery, a special bond of trust and affection developed between Pojeky and GiGi.
Dubuisson, the founder and director of Wild at Heart, expressed profound awe at the extraordinary bond between GiGi and Pojeky, stating, “I have never witnessed such a profound connection between humans and these magnificent birds.” This deeply emotional moment moved everyone present to tears and serves as a testament to the profound connection that can be formed between humans and animals.
During one particular instance, Pojeky had to leave for a visit to Michigan, leaving GiGi without his reassuring presence for some time. Upon his return, he was greeted by a heartwarming display of gratitude. GiGi approached him, embracing him with her wings and gently resting her head on his shoulder, conveying her deep appreciation and love for her rescuer.
